Case Study - Xstrata Mount Isa Mines (QLD)

Case Study - Xstrata Mount Isa Mines (QLD)

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines
Winner, Minerals and Energy Award

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines processes and mines copper and zinc ore from both underground and open cut mines. The ore grade varies from 1 per cent metal to more than 7 per cent.

In a concentrate form, the metal content is increased to approximately 28 per cent for copper and 50 per cent for zinc. Further value for copper is added by processing the concentrates into anode on-site in Mount Isa, and then refining the anode into cathode at the Townsville Copper Refinery.

Xstrata has made significant capital investments with a 103 per cent increase in annual investment over the past three years. During this time, zinc and copper exports by volume have increased by 105 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines is also extremely proud of its sustainable development practices. Its commitments to, and achievements in, employee and contractor safety, the environment, and to the regional communities supporting the operations are powerful support for on-going success.
