Case Study - Prism Defence (SA)

Winner, Small to Medium Services Award

Formed in 2004, Prism Defence is a team of highly-skilled test pilots, flight test engineers, and other aviation engineering specialists. They specialise in the integration of helicopters with ships; providing pilot training, flight deck team training, flight trials, certification and engineering analysis.

Prism Defence won its first international contract in 2005 and has since worked steadily to expand its business in Denmark, Sweden, Brunei and New Zealand. In 2011, Prism Defence’s main export activity focused on the Royal Brunei Armed Forces. It was the company’s biggest contract to date. Their export earnings increased by 36 per cent in 2010–11, to more than $3 million.

The company credits a large part of its success to its highly-skilled team. Building on this foundation, Prism Defence has developed a dynamic analysis tool in-house, giving the company a competitive advantage in their export markets.

The company has established a local presence in Scandinavia to service the needs of its European customers.

The Export Awards judges were impressed by Prism Defence’s strong export focus with a sound and targeted strategy for growing exports; and their innovative use of technology.
