Founded in 1999, Yumbah Aquaculture is a geographically diverse company focused on growing premium Greenlip abalone. Responsible for the entire production chain from breeding, aqua-feed production, marketing and distribution, Yumbah is the largest abalone producer in the Southern Hemisphere. Yumbah Aquaculture supplies approximately 60 per cent of the total 1,000 mega-tonnes of cultured Abalone produced in Australia. It takes two and a half years for Yumbah to grow an abalone from egg to harvest size at its hatcheries in its South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. Abalone farming is a very sustainable high value low volume aquaculture industry.
Abalone is one of the oceans' most highly prized delicacies, particularly in northern Asia, where it has been enjoyed for thousands of years. The meat is firm with texture like a scallop crossed with a fleshy mushroom; flavour is subtle and sea-sweet. Yumbah abalone is hand harvested and snap frozen, shipped live or processed into cans and retort packs.
During the past fifty years over-exploitation of wild abalone fisheries has led to decline in supply, providing an opportunity for aquaculture to fill the shortfall. Yumbah has built a business that involves pumping large volumes of oceanic water to shore-based tanks where it mimics the optimum environment for these curious marine snails.
In November 2017, Yumbah opened its new Central Processing Facility at Wingfield, South Australia making it the only Australian abalone farmer to own and control every aspect of our operations from feed development right through to processing, packaging, and sales.
More than 80 per cent of the 700 tonnes of abalone grown at Yumbah’s four farms is exported to Japan, Asia, the US and Europe.
Judges commended Yumbah on its strategic vertical integration, adopting innovative processing technologies to give it a sustainable competitive advantage and for its strong focus on the customer.
