Henderson (Whadjuk), Western Australia.
Matrix has achieved some significant export wins — including major international contracts that required deep technical expertise, persistence, and collaboration across the business. This recognition as winner of the 2025 Resources and Energy award is about celebrating the people behind those results.
Aaron Begley, Chief Executive Officer.
Matrix Composites & Engineering offers Aussie exporters an important lesson: that local capability can deliver on a global scale.
Thie winner of the Australian Export Awards 2025 Resources and Energy award is a pioneer in advanced composite solutions. It delivers high-performance materials and technologies for the global energy, resources and defence sectors.
’From the beginning, our mission has been to engineer products that excel in the world’s most demanding environments,’ says Aaron Begley, Chief Executive Officer at Matrix Composites & Engineering.
’Our solutions support traditional, transitional and emerging markets, including offshore wind and green hydrogen.’
Headquartered in Perth, distance from the world stage has never been a limitation for Matrix. Instead, it has been a catalyst for creativity.
’Without immediate access to global supply chains or large-scale support networks, we’ve had to think differently and innovate boldly,’ says Begley.
This mindset has become a competitive advantage.
’Today, we operate a robust supply chain capable of delivering complex composite solutions anywhere in the world,’ says Begley. ’Our Australian roots have instilled resilience, independence, and a commitment to quality.’
In 2024, Matrix secured a major international contract with engineering giant Saipem.
The contract represented a major achievement for the company.
’It was one of our largest international projects. It required us to deliver high-performance buoyancy systems for deepwater installation in South America,’ says Begley.
The project didn’t just deliver results—it propelled Matrix into a new phase of international growth, tripling its business development team and fast-tracking export-ready technologies.
Brazil is now a key export market for Matrix. One that wasn’t a primary target at first.
’Over time, we’ve recognised Brazil’s strategic importance within the global energy sector,’ says Begley. ’We have invested in building relationships and technical credibility.’
The company has an agent working to support customer engagement and project delivery in the country.
’This local presence has been critical in strengthening trust, improving responsiveness, and ensuring seamless execution of complex subsea projects,’ says Begley.
While many of our customers are overseas, what we do creates high-value local jobs, strengthens local industry, and supports national interests.
In today’s market, Matrix must manage a constantly shifting logistics landscape.
’Freight costs, availability, and lead times continue to fluctuate. This adds pressure to project delivery schedules,’ says Begley.
To tackle this, Matric has strengthened its planning processes and built flexibility into its supply chain. ’We’ve also engaged specialist support to help manage international workforce movements more efficiently,’ says Begley.
Matrix works to reduce its environmental impact through ethical sourcing and innovation.
The company sources and manufactures recyclable materials to minimise waste. It has installed rooftop solar panels to significantly cut its carbon footprint.
’We also continue to innovate environmentally conscious solutions like our Matrix Ultralight Carbon Foam, which incorporates recycled carbon fibre,’ says Begley.
Matrix has a longstanding relationship with the Australian Export Awards. The company is a three-time national finalist (in 2011, 2014 and 2024) and past winner of the 2010 Manufacturing and Advanced Materials award category. It is the winner of the 2025 Resources and Energy award category.
Matrix consistently applies to the awards to acknowledge the hard work its team puts in.
’Matrix has achieved some significant export wins. This includes major international contracts that required deep technical expertise, persistence, and collaboration across the business,’ says Begley.
’This recognition as winner of the Resources and Energy award is about celebrating the people behind those results.’
Matrix plans to continue investing in international business development, engineering capacity, and tooling to support sustainable export growth.
Importantly, the company wants to be known not just for exporting engineering excellence, but for building sovereign capability.
’While many of our customers are overseas, what we do creates high-value local jobs, strengthens local industry, and supports national interests,’ says Begley.
’That matters because it reinforces our ability to compete globally while contributing meaningfully at home.’
