Premier Metal Recyclers puts the pedal to the metal for sustainable Aussie exports

Premier Metal Recyclers proves that export success doesn’t have to cost the earth.

The clean-tech scrap-metal processor collects, sorts and refines metal waste into certified raw materials. This conserves natural resources, prevents landfill waste and shores up global supply chains.

By reclaiming end-of-life metal, the 2025 Australian Exporter of the Year and winner of the Sustainability and Green Economy award category also cuts energy use by up to 75%. Talk about turning trash into treasure!

‘Exporters who prioritise innovation and sustainability can thrive internationally,’ says Abdullah Abdullah, Director at Premier Metal Recyclers. ‘We want to be remembered as a leader in sustainable recycling that reduces waste, protects resources, and creates a greener economy.’

Social impact safeguards the planet

Premier Metal Recyclers embeds social impact across its global operations.

‘We ensure every ton of scrap metal we export upholds the highest ethical, environmental and social standards,’ says Abdullah.

The company vets all collection partners against stringent environmental and labour standards. It requires valid licences and ISO 14001 or equivalent certifications.

‘This builds trust with customers worldwide while also safeguarding our planet,’ says Abdullah.

Overcoming market volatility with environmentally conscious efficiency

Global freight costs and market volatility are among Premier Metal Recyclers’ most pressing challenges.

The company addresses these challenges by diversifying buyers, investing in logistics efficiency, and leveraging technology to streamline supply chains.

‘A major turning point was building our state-of-the-art facility in Western Australia during a period of global price volatility,’ says Abdullah. ‘It taught us that resilience, innovation and investing in efficiency are key to long-term success.’

Harnessing solar for more sustainable solutions

Premier Metal Recyclers seeks to be greener in everything it does. Its facility is equipped with rooftop solar panels that supply most of its daytime energy needs.

The company is currently installing a battery-storage system to capture excess solar generation. This pushes it toward 24/7 renewable energy.

‘Over time, this combination of solar generation and battery backup will allow us to operate off-grid, further reducing carbon intensity and improving reliability,’ says Abdullah.

Sights on Southeast Asia and the Middle East

Sights are now set on Southeast Asia as a growing export market.

‘We will particularly target Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand due to their growing demand for recycled raw materials to fuel industrial and construction expansion,’ says Abdullah.

Exports to the Middle East are also set to expand.

‘This market emerged quite unexpectedly through a strong demand for high-quality recycled steel,’ Abdullah says.

Austrade provides valuable guidance for Aussie exporters

Premier Metal Recyclers deeply values its relationship with Austrade and its ability to support export success in a meaningful way.

‘Austrade has provided market insights and introductions that helped us access new buyers in Asia,’ says Abdullah.

‘Their guidance on compliance and local business culture was especially valuable in establishing trust with overseas partners.’

Australian Export Awards showcase how sustainability can drive global growth

Premier Metal Recyclers was recognised as a national finalist in the Emerging Exporter award category in both the 2022 and 2023 Australian Export Awards.
